Do What You Love! How A Stress-Free Life Can Help Reach Your Best Health
I am an enormous advocate of following your heart, your gut and listening closely to your intuition. I have a friend who often says, “You only live once, and this isn’t a dress rehearsal”. Easy words to read… but not so easy to always live by.
When you pursue something in life that doesn’t speak to what you love – you can usually tell in the outcome. When your heart isn’t in it, it is more challenging, it is stressful, and your pursuit can take a serious toll on both your mental and physical health.
It isn’t pretty, and I learned this the hard way.
I have always wanted to help change people’s lives but during undergrad school, my end goal was not always nutrition. When I discovered that the goals in my heart; did not match what I was physically pursuing in school… I struggled BIG TIME and it was life-altering.
I wasn’t just fighting with myself about my end career goals; but the stress that ensued as result of this struggle caused multiple other problems.
I fought my body, I fought my immune system, I fought my endocrine system and the underlying issue of all of these health concerns was that I was fighting my gut feeling and my heart.
I learned that fighting yourself inside, pushing yourself to pursue something you do not love wholeheartedly, or something other than your TRUE PASSION… Is not healthy.
I discovered that:
1. When you study and practice what you love and follow your heart, you flourish beyond your wildest imagination. I love medicine, but I love medicine as it applies to food and nutrition, how nutrition applies to varied medical concerns, prevention and helping people make changes to their life and their health.
2. My body does not respond well to high stress! High stress > high cortisol > serious cravings > poor blood sugar control > weight gain > more stress and upset... And the vicious cycle continues… Until you create change!
3. Excessive exercise can sometimes be inflammation-promoting and get in the way of your goals. Hours and hours on the treadmill and elliptical didn’t do much when I was fighting my body in so many other ways. I was creating more harm and stress on my system than anything else.
I lost myself to stress, high cortisol levels, a dysfunctional thyroid and a dysfunctional immune system… It was traumatic and I felt like I would never crawl out of that quicksand.
I don’t think the path is ever straight & narrow in life or health; I think we all have our own journey but I do know this: Following my dream to study/practice nutrition and subsequently starting JMN was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life and my journey.
I was, and I still am determined to be the person to others that I so desperately needed for many years.
Today, because I listened to my heart, I get to work with people in Florida and all over the country! I speak with people over the phone and via email, helping them to learn and understand their health, learn what their bloodwork means from a nutritional perspective, and discover what foods and supplements that may help support their most optimal health.
Being a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist is my career but creating JMN and helping people through my career; that is nothing short of a gift to my life and to my health.
My friend is right, this is not a dress rehearsal. We only have one go at it, so we better make it unbelievable.
Thank you for being a part of the JMN Family, and essentially part of my dreams becoming reality.
